About us
The Greek Node of the European Research Infrastructure (RI) METROFOOD-RI (https://www.metrofood.eu/) aims to provide high-level metrology services in food and nutrition sector to enhance the quality and safety of food at national, regional, European and global level.
The Greek Node (METROFOOD-GR) is supported by groups of scientists with physical and electronic infrastructures located in specific departments and laboratories of 6 different institutions of the country: Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Agricultural University of Athens (AUA), Chemical Metrology Laboratory-IARP (EXHM), Mediterranean Agricultural Institute of Chania (MAICH), Center for Public Health Research and Education (CPHRE) of the Academy of Athens and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR) Center of the University of Ioannina (UI). The Greek Node is coordinated by AUTH according to the sharing model (Huband Node).
The Greek hub is organized at the national level, so that the involved research units and institutions cooperate complementary and efficiently in the field of research, the services provided, in educational issues and the transfer of know-how to scientists, authorities, producers, processors, industry and society.
The Greek Node can support the development and production, authentication, quality control and nutritional value of food products through its experimental units (farm, greenhouses) and processing units (AUA, AUTH), high-tech analytical laboratories and metrological know-how (NMR Center, EXHM, MAIX, AUA, AUTH), the available food composition databases (CPHRE) as well as artificial intelligence tools (blockchain).
Products of the agri-food sector (virgin olive oils, table olives, honey, cheeses, yogurt, spices, wines, fruits, vinegars, etc.) and traditional recipes are among those for which the Greek Node can provide technical services in its distributed facilities situated in the above institutions. The expertise of the researchers from the collaborating laboratories is reinforced by that offered by the other bodies participating in the METROFOOD European Research Infrastructure from various EU countries (Italy, Germany, Czech Republic, Spain, Slovenia, Romania) as well as from associated countries (Switzerland, Turkey, North Macedonia).
